Karachi, the capital of Sindh's historic areas like Lyari, Kharadar, Mithadar, and Keamari, remainex the hub of Pakistan's Independence Movement. Until 1965, Karachi was Pakistan's capital, embracing millions of migrants in 1947. This city of lights and progress is now known as the "Mother of the Poor" because of its humanistic approach without discrimnation of ethnicity and belief. Key figures like Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Abdullah Haroon, G.M. Syed, Liaquat Ali Khan, and the Memon and Kutchi communities of Khara Dar & Mitha Dar played pivotal roles in its development.
In public welfare, Abdul Sattar Edhi's family and the Seelani Welfare Trust are renowned entitities of Southern Sindh.
Another great Philanthropist and industrialist Mohammed Bashir Jan Muhammad has been a contiuing force behind social services for a century now. The MBJ School of Nursing, under the leadership of Madam Talat Shah, has emerged as a new beacon of excellence in nursing and midwifery sector as well.
Every year, this school hosts Florence Nightingale's Lamp Lighting ceremony, attended by philanthropists, medical experts, and government officials. On November 6, the stage was shared by Mohammed Bashir Jan Muhammad, Professor Dr. Saeed Qureshi Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences, Dr Dabeer Ahmed Khan Director for Development of Health Govt of Sindh , Ms Najma Mangi Director Nursing Sindh.
As nursing students and graduates lit lamps, the beach side of the hotel sparkled like Diwali. Besides the long coconut trees of the beach, Shah Abdul Latif's verses kept reverberating in my mind:
پَڳَھَ پاسي ويھُ، آيَلِ! سامُونڊيُن جي؛
تون ويسِرِي وِکَ کَڻِين، ھو پُورِيندا پَرَڏيھُ؛
سَمُنڊُ جِن ساڻيھُ، ڪوھُ نہ ويئِينءَ تِن سين .!
"Sit beside their anchor cable, oh mother. The sailors will travel far farther... Why don't you go with those whose homeland is the ocean?"
I express gratitude to Dr. Khalid Iqbal CEO KGH, Director MBJ SONAM Ms.Talat Shah, Principal Mr.Muhammad Shahid and Kharadar General Hospital administration for inviting me this year too. I thank God that this nursing school's recognition and NOC were granted during my directorship . May Allah bless me and my family for such endeavors. May this institution shine for another century, and keep producing fine nursing-midwifery workforce serving humanity of wretched people across Metropolis, Sindh and Pakistan.
