Are you confused about the terms BSN, BScN, Generic BSN, Post-RN, BS Nursing, and BSc Nursing? We receive many questions about these terms at PKN. This updated post will clarify these terms, especially in the context of recent changes in Pakistan.
In short, the Generic BSN is a degree program for individuals who wish to join the nursing profession after 12 years of schooling, while the Post-RN BScN is a degree program for nurses who already have a three-year diploma in nursing.
Generic BSN
The Generic BSN is an ideal option for those who want to enter the nursing profession in Pakistan. Previously, another option to join the nursing profession was the 3-year diploma in general nursing. However, according to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan's policies, the diploma in nursing was phased out across Pakistan in 2018.
The Generic BSN is a 4-year degree program followed by a one-year internship. An internship involves practical nursing practice in a hospital under the supervision of senior nurses. Males and females aged between 17 to 25 years with FSc (pre-medical) can apply for the Generic BSN program. This program is also known as BSN, Generic, or BS Nursing. The Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery in Karachi first introduced this program in Pakistan in 1997.
Post-RN BScN
The Post-RN BScN stands for Post-Registered Nurse Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Unlike the Generic BSN program, the Post-RN BScN is not an entry-level program. It is designed for those who already have a diploma in general nursing, a one-year specialty diploma, two years of clinical experience, and registration with the Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC). Since it is completed after registration with the PNC, it is called Post-Registered Nurse (Post-RN). It is also known as BScN or BSc Nursing. Post-RN BScN degree holders, who are already registered with PNC, do not need to appear in the licensure examination of PNC.
The Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery in Karachi initiated the Post-RN program in Pakistan in 1988. In the past, Post-RN BScN degree holders faced some technical issues in obtaining the equivalence of 16 years of education from the HEC. However, these issues have been resolved, and degree holders can now obtain the equivalence without any difficulties. It is important to note that the HEC has also announced plans to phase out the Post-RN BScN program in 2026.
Conclusion
Understanding the difference between Generic BSN and Post-RN BScN is crucial for aspiring nursing professionals in Pakistan, especially considering the recent changes in nursing education. The Generic BSN is an entry-level program for those who want to join the nursing profession, while the Post-RN BScN is for nurses who have already completed a diploma in nursing and are registered with the PNC.
