BS Nursing Students Hold Gender Sensitization Seminar with Transgender Leaders as Guest Speakers in Rufaida CON Hamdard University.
Rufayda Hamdard College of Nursing (R-HCN) organized a unique Academic Session on Seminar Theme “Humanity has no Gender” in connection to BSN's Course Culture Health & Society in collaboration with Hamdard Foundation where renowned Transgender Leaders Ms. Zehrish Khanzadi, Program Manager of Gender Interactive Alliance (GIA) & Ms. Bindiya Rana, Executive Director GIA, were the guest speakers of the day.
Beginning with the introduction of the speakers and activists, the Principal R-CON and, a Ph D Scholar Ms. Alia Nasir briefed students about:
(i) gender sensitization and the role of nurses,
(ii) the definition of gender and sex, and
(iii) gender identity vs biological sex.
The Vice Principal Ms. Fahmeda Khwaja followed with presentation on this sensitive social issue in context with the Course and the sad reality of discrimination with transgenders. She said that the role of nurses in such matters includes: application code of Ethics; Respect; Patient Autonomy; Confidentiality and Privacy; Advocacy; Cultural Competence; Holistic Care.
Ms Bindiya Rana shared her back experiences, the challenges faced by transgender and their group (GIA) had to face to reach this stage that Parliament has passed The Bill /ACT of Transgenders which is lying in the Supreme and Shariah courts. She told about transgenders' consistent efforts under GIA to win for them the fsame human rights as to men and women.
Shazadi thanked the leadership of Hamdard Foundation for offering them medical services in their Niamat Begum Hospital and issuing hundreds of Health Cards to transgenders to treat all diseases free of cost. She acknowledged this health facility as the first time blessing to their community in Pakistan. She told our community has prayers for Hamdard Founders with tears in their eyes when they find this place as home at time of distress, disease, suffering and death.
Zehrish Khanzadi, Programme Manager *GIA made a topic related presentation saying that Transgender Persons are guaranteed with all fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan However the Transgender Act recognizes specific actions on the right to inherit property, voting, education employment ,healthcare assembly and to hold public officeas officers or as politicians . She told Transgender- ACT recognizes their identity as a distinct gender. She also shared a video on the birth of a transgenders.
The Students also shared their childhood experiences with the brave transgender leaders. At the end students, the faculty and the transgender leaders intermingled at the refreshment party and had photo sessions. In that while all the women, men and transgenders present in seminar seemed inclusive and one human fraternity under one roof of Rufaida College of Nursing.
