Fake News | UNICEF | Coronavirus

یونیسیف کے نام سے پھیلنے والا یہ میسیج اور اس میسیج کی بنیاد پر بننے والی وڈیوز صرف افواہیں ہیں۔ ان کا حقیقت سے کوئی تعلق نہیں۔

This message is a perfect example of how fake news about Coronavirus are spreading around the world. A few days back, the message was viral on Whatsapp saying the information was from UNICEF. However, any link from UNICEF was not provided in the message.

Now, someone has written UNICEF at the top and also included their institution's logo and name but everything else is the same. If one would see carefully the asterisk marks (*), used in Whatsapp to bold the text, are also there.

In a few more days, someone may replace the name at the top with the logo of UNICEF and the message would seem to be an official statement. The statement would spread around the world like coronavirus itself.

"اس وقت ہمارا  سب سے بڑا دشمن خود کرونا وائرس نہیں بلکہ خوف، افواہیں، اور مریضوں سے متعصبانہ  رویہ ہیں۔"

In the message, one may also notice that the size of Coronavirus is mentioned as "400 to 500 micro". However, a sane mind would not find this unit (micro) anywhere in the literature.

However, it may be assumed that it was actually "micron" with a typing mistake. A micron means a millimetre. Whereas, 400 to 500 millimetre long virus would never be able to invade cells which are too small and can only be seen by a microscope.

Even there is no mention of a droplet in the message. Whereas, World Health Organization, CDC, and dozens of other authentic sources of information have stated that Covid-19 Coronavirus spreads through droplets in the air.

Furthermore, the exact survival time of Coronavirus on different surfaces has also been given in the message. On the other hand, even the WHO is not sure about the survival time of the coronavirus on the surfaces. WHO states:

It is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems to behave like other coronaviruses. Studies suggest that coronaviruses (including preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. This may vary under different conditions (e.g. type of surface, temperature or humidity of the environment).

Hence, given the reasons mentioned above, the message is a rumour and has not been issued by UNICEF. We should not forward such baseless messages to others. We should also be doubtful about the effectiveness of other remedies that are advised in the message.

The actual guidelines given by UNICEF are given here. https://www.unicef.org/lebanon/coronavirus

The text of the Whatsapp message in English and its Urdu and the Sindhi versions are also given here:

Corona virus is large in size where the cell diameter is 400-500 micro and for this reason any mask prevents its entry so there is no need to use pharmacists to trade muzzles.

The virus does not settle in the air but is grounded, so it is not transmitted by air.

Coronavirus when it falls on a metal surface, it will live 12 hours, so washing hands with soap and water well enough.

Corona virus when it falls on the fabric remains 9 hours, so washing clothes or being exposed to the sun for two hours meets the purpose of killing it.

The virus lives on the hands for 10 minutes, so putting an alcohol sterilizer in the pocket meets the purpose of prevention.

If the virus is exposed to a temperature of 26-27 ° C. it will be killed, as it does not live in hot regions.  Also drinking hot water and sun exposure will do the trick
And stay away from ice cream and eating cold is important.

Gargle with warm and salt water kills the tonsils' germs and prevents them from leaking into the lungs.

Adherence to these instructions fulfills the purpose of preventing viruses.
