Nursing in Pakistan | Interview with Dr Raisa Gul

What is nursing? What is the current state of nursing profession in Pakistan? What are the challanges and opportunities in nursing profession in Pakistan? These questions have been comprehensively addressed by Dr. Raisa Gul, Dean and Professor at Shifa College of Nursing, Islamabad in a video interview conducted by Ibex Media Network (IMN). Having diverse experinece as a nurse, as a head nurse and as an educatore, Dr Raisa Gul has explained that nursing is often misunderstood as an easy job. But, in reality, it demands immense dedication. She also shared the challenges faced by female nurses and the global shortage of nursing professionals in other countries.

Nursing is becoming one of the most demanding professions in Pakistan as well as around the world. According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), there is a global nursing shortage of 5.9 million. The International Council of Nurses warned that there could be a shortage of 13 million nurses by 2030 unless drastic actions are not taken.

The Pakistan Nursing & Midwifery Council (PNMC) has introduced a new uniform dress code for nurses working in clinical settings across the country. The announcement, in an official letter from the PNMC dated January 31, 2024, stated guidance about professional attire of nursing staff in Pakistan.
