MSN and MSPH Equivalence Issue

Very heated debate about equivalence of MSN and MSPH is going on. The issue stems from a meeting being called by the apex body of nursing in Pakistan. Proponents and openents are both nurses; experienced and highly qualified, some are seniors and some are emerging leaders. All are respectsbles and every one holds their own value in their domain.

1. As far as as MSN and MPH are considered, they are equal in terms of numbers of years, that is 18 years of education is required to get them like any other degree. Both degrees have importance in their own domains, however neither of these degrees can replace each other.

2. For running the affairs of a nursing school we need graduates having MSN or PhD in Nursing because only these are qualified for the job.

3. HEC also asks for Master or PhD in the same field for faculty positions in any subject, for example MS Phsiotherapy or PhD in Physiotherapy can be Assistant Professor or Principal in a college to teach Physiotherapy in a Physiotherapy college.

4. MPH graduates may be utilized in Public health areas to uplift public health Nursing in the country but cannot replace MSN.

5. I have personally observed many MSN graduates are jobless in market because they ask for a decent pay due to which owners of private schools are reluctant to hire them, where as MPH are available to work on low wages. If MPH is equalized to MSN no one would hire any single MSN graduate.

In terms of years of schooling, MSN and MPH is equal but for posts in nursing sector. One need MSN.

New Nurses Uniform by Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council (January 2024)

The Pakistan Nursing & Midwifery Council (PNMC) has introduced a new uniform dress code for nurses working in clinical settings across the country. The announcement, in an official letter from the PNMC dated January 31, 2024, stated guidance about professional attire of nursing staff in Pakistan. The new dress code approved during the 6th session of the council held from January 15-17, 2024, under the leadership of Ms. Farzana Zulfiger, President of PNMC, specifies new uniforms for male and female nurses. PNC Decision: Head of Nursing Institute Must be a Nursing Professional, not a Medical Doctor

The Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC), now called Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council (PNMC), has made two important decisions that are related to appointing heads of nursing institutions from the nursing cadre only. The first decision, made during the 21st session of the PNC Council Executive Committee in 2016, is that nursing institutions must ensure that their Heads of Nursing Institutions (e.g. Deans, Directors, Principals, etc.) must be from nursing cadre professionals, and not medical doctors or other non-nursing professionals. The committee expressed concern over the appointment of non-nursing professionals in charge of nursing colleges, nursing schools, and public health schools, despite the presence of many qualified nursing professionals in the country.
