As speculated earlier, the government of Pakistan has formally declared 2019 as the "Year of Nursing" in Pakistan. The announcement was made by President Dr Arif Alvi in his address at the First Pakistan Nursing & Midwifery Summit 2019 at the President House in Islamabad.
Addressing the occasion the President said the nursing is the backbone of healthcare systems. He a said that that the capacity building of nurses and midwives would be among the priorities of the government.
The president announced the establishment of a National Nursing University and ensured to deal with the obstacles in its establishment. Moreover, the president declared that the nursing diploma would be replaced by degree programme across Pakistan.
The president also inaugurated " Nursing Now Pakistan" as part of the global "Nursing Now Campaign" supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Council of Nurses (ICN). See details here.
The summit was also attended by the Director-General WHO, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and representative of Nursing Now, Dr Catherine Hannaway.
